Working with Palmer and Grace was the dream team.
It’s very rare to step into a studio space—never having met the people you’re about to be in very close quarters with—and find that you all align so well. The result was an end product that sounded better than I could have expected.
Palmer’s attitude around recording and producing is very open-minded and never overbearing, which is personally so important when trying to collaborate and bounce ideas around on how to
put all the pieces together. He is possibly the most efficient and driven audio engineer I’ve worked with—taking less time than a bathroom break to set up mics and get sound going. If you’re on a roll, he is the person you want pushing the buttons.
Grace could make anyone feel at home in the studio and makes a mean Aldi lasagne. If you ever need some hype about what you’re doing, or a change of conversation because you can’t listen to your tracks another hundred times, she is the woman on the job. The way she handles communication before it’s time to start recording, and Palmer’s prompt and adaptive comms before and after sessions, is very professional and shows how focused he is—even after you leave the studio.
The space is very well equipped with everything we needed to record a stupidly large amount of tracks, and it even caters to live recording well. I’ll be back to record more live sessions and single tracking as soon as I can.
The tracks that came out of my time at Nuthouse Studios have been passed around to many ears for input, and more often than not, people have said they sound “radio ready” and “better
than anything I have recorded previously in any band.” (Disclaimer: they were also done in studios—not a bedroom job.)
